BREADTH, DEPTH AND SOURCES OF DATA
PRESENTATION
WHY I DEVELOPED THIS WEB SITE
USE OF MY FLAG AND MAP IMAGES
1. You can use the images off line, on presentations, school work and brochures, free of charge, with one the following attributions:
2. You can also use them free of charge on commercial publications, provided that the following attribution appears on the same page as each image used.
---------------------------------
What is presented here is basic data on each country for each year from 1989 to the last available year (in addition to any older, historical information in the Library of Congress country studies). It is useful to those who wish to see a snapshot of country facts in a past year and to those interested in time series analysis.
Projections of future populations, up to 2050, are also included.
In addition to past and present CIA world fact books, I have added the history section of the Library of Congress country studies for the countries where such studies exist.
Additional data came from the United Nations and other sources, as noted in the applicable section or page.
I made the CIA World Fact Book data for the years 1992 through 1995 available in spreadsheet format as well, and I plan to produce similar spreadsheets for later years. These spreadsheets make it much easier to produce ranking tables for selected countries, and to otherwise format and manipulate data.
Various components of this web site were developed over a period of years, beginning in 1995. Consequently the look and feel of various pages varies greatly. Additionally, the pages were hosted in different domains* of mine for whatever economy and expediency was compelling at the time. [*these include www.theodora.com, www.geographic.org, www.occupationalinfo.org, allcountries.org www.photius.com, www.workmall.com, www.immigration-usa.com, www.zhfacts.com, and www.greekorthodoxchurch.org] Yet, in spite of the lack of uniformity of appearance, the data are presented in a relatively consistent manner. Furthermore, a visitor who explores them will see how the site -- and my own skills -- evolved, from the nostalgic, text-based, primitive look of old to the fancier presentation of early 21st century web.
Having lived on four continents, studied for what seems a lifetime and worked in a wide variety of organizations -- from Wall Street to transportation, from telecommunications and manufacturing to government -- there came a time for my middle age lifestyle change. Others went from an executive career to a farm. I went into developing and publishing informational web pages, living off the income from ads, such as those at the bottom of this page.
