Stralsund Historical marketplace by night, Vorpommern

Stralsund Historical marketplace by night, Vorpommern, Germany photo

SOURCE: Eisenack, courtesy of the German National Tourist Board, used with permission.

The magical historic district of Stralsund with its powerful churches, the stately homes of rich tradesmen and filigree town hall appears like an elegant Christmas card at night.

At the height of the Hanseatic League, this town in West Pomerania - like its sister Wismar in Mecklenburg - rose to impressive power and great wealth.

Today both towns are protected as UNESCO world heritage sites.
