Vouliagmeni beach near Athens

This photo, taken in the spring of 2010, shows the public (i.e., government operated) beach in Vouliagmeni, a coastal suburb of Athens.

Because of its location in a deep gulf, surrounded by hills and mountains, the sea here is almost always calm. The water is crystal clear, and the sand very fine.

Voulagmeni beach is open year-round and among its other facilities it has tennis courts, basketball, volleyball, children's playground, a fine restaurant and several cafes.

Not far from it is Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni, a privately operated and very expensive and exclussive beach with more luxourious facilities.

There are dozens of great beaches near Athens.
