Vouliagmeni lake near Athens, Greece Photo
Vouliagmeni lake near Athens
SOURCE: Photo by Photius Coutsoukis.

This photo, taken in the January 2012, shows part of Vouliagmeni ("sunken") lake, in Vouliagmeni, a coastal suburb of Athens.

It is located accross the road from the beautiful beaches of Vouliagmeni.

Fed by an underground thermal (hot) spring, the water of this lake mixes with nearby seawater through an underground tunnel, maintaining an almost constant temperature of about 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Farenheit).

The lake is open to the public year-round and it has dressing rooms, showers and a cafe.

The lake shelters many small Gara Ruffa fish, which lurk in the shallow parts, and gather around the feet of the bathers, gently exfoliating the skin around their toes and feet.
