Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, Leinster Kilkenny, an inland town, experiences a continental type climate and is known for its extremes of temperature. Meandering through the city is the river Nore, which has made a significant contribution to its development. A particular characteristic of Kilkenny is its limestone base, and this combined with the other stones quarried in and around the city has contributed to the unique buildings of the city. "The Marble City" is one of Kilkenny's many names, arising from the vein of black marble found here. SOURCE: Roger Kinkead, courtesy of Tourism Ireland.
