The A-bomb Dome, Hiroshima

This building, designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel and completed in April 1915, was the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition.

During the American atomic bombimg, the first atom bomb to be used against mankind, and which destroyed Hiroshima killing 140,000 people, detonated almost directly above the dome, at 8:15 on August 6th, 1945.

The atom bomb dome is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
