Yakushima (or Yaku-shima), is one of the Osumi Islands, located to the south of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture.

It has an area of about 500 square kilometers and a population of 15,000.

Yakushima island's highest point is Miyanoura-dake at 1,935 metres (6,360 ft), covered in dense, old growth forest.
