Yamadera (Risshakuji) Temple, Miyagi prefecture

Ryushaku-ji Temple, also known as Risshakuji, was founded in 860 AD by the priest Ennin.

The monks here have spent the centuries since then digging caves into the mountain.

To go from the entrance of the complex to the Oku-no-in sanctuary at the top requires climbing 1110 steps.
