![]() Northern lights (aurora borealis) over Tromso, Troms, Northern Norway Tromso city is the ninth largest urban area in Norway by population. It is "The Gateway to the Arctic", with the most Northern Lights in the world, 2 months of Midnight Sun, a lively, colourful downtown rich in Arctic history, surrounded by the drama of the Lyngen Alps, blue fjords and hundreds of island, and a mere 2000 km from the North Pole. Well within the Arctic Circle, the sun shines 24/7 for more than 2 months in Tromso, keeping the tromsoites awake and energetic into the night. Hikes, glacier walks, church concerts and kayaking can just as well take place at midnight. Festivals are yet another excuse for staying up.
