Reindeer, West Norway Reindeer antlers grow again each year under a layer of fur called velvet. The female varies in weight between 60 and 170 kilograms and measures 162205 centimeters long, while the male (or "bull") is typically larger, weighing 100318 kilograms and measuring 180214 centimeters in head-and-body length. Mating occurs from late September to early November, with the males battling for access to females, and the most dominant males can collect as many as 15-20 females with which to mate.
