The Norwegian Opera and Ballet building, Oslo

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is the largest stage for music theatre and dance in the country.

It consists of two companies, the National Opera and The National Ballet. The Norwegian Opera was founded in 1957 and gave its opening performance in 1959. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is organised as a limited company and is 90 percent state-owned, 10 percent owned by The Norwegian Opera Fund.

In 2000, Norwegian architect firm Snohetta was chosen as winner of the anonymous architectural competition. Groundworks began in 2003 and on April 12 2008 the new opera house opened with a Gala Performance.
