Turtle Island from the air, Taiwan photo
Turtle Island from the air

Shaped like a floating turtle, Turtle Island is a volcanic island 10 kilometers off the coast of Toucheng in Yilan county.

The island was known as early as the Cing dynasty for its "eight scenic wonders": "sunrise at Turtle Island", "sulfur mists of Turtle Island", "sheer cliffs of Turtle Island", "eggs of the turtle", "divine turtle wagging its tail", "divine turtle wearing a hat", "stalactites and stalagmites in Eyeglass Cave", and "upwelling underwater hot springs".

The shallow waters around Turtle Island host many kinds of fishes, making it one of Taiwan's most important fishing grounds as well as a site for whale- and dolphin-watching.
